ZVUE: First Look

ZVUE ZINE - An Interactive Consumer Community: News, Reviews, Interviews, Forum, Free Downloadable Multimedia ZVUE! Content (Posted: December 10)

Carl Page, Chief Technology Officer Hand Held Entertainment, shows off a working prototype of the $99 ZVUE, a personal video player, that will be available nationwide in about 8 weeks. Listen to my exclusive audio interview (wmv, 5 minutes, 230K) using the Madplayer, a hand held music studio, as a digital voice recorder. (NOTE: There is a slight buzz to the audio file from increasing the volume in post production and compressing the file at 6.5Kbps)

Hands On Impression
ZVUE is Totally DroolCool.
The portable player will be a runaway hit this fall selling season.

I was the first member of the press to see and play with an actual working model.
The screen is a good size for watching videos and the sound is pure and clean.

The ZVUE! prototype rests on a pair of heardphones.
NOTE: A pair of earbuds will be included with the palm sized video player.

Where will the ZVUE! be released?

According to the gizmodo article, users will have to buy media from HHE; according to the audio interview, there will eventually be some kind of mechanism to play personal media on the ZVUE!. In that case, if I was to buy a dvd of Moulin Rouge, for example, there would be no mechanism to make it so that I could watch the movie on the ZVUE! and I would have to buy another copy from HHE?

Watching "legal" content on the ZVUE!

Just because there isn't a "mechanism" today HandHeld Entertainment to hypothetically transfer a digital version of a logally purchased copy Moulin Rouge to the ZVUE! doesn't mean that A) HHE hasn't anticipated such issues and interest, or B) that the ability to make such transfers possible will or will not be available in the future.

In fact, it's my understanding that such a "mechanism" will be forthcoming in 2004; it's just not formally anounced yet.

Re: Watching "legal" content on the ZVUE!

That still leaves you unable to record TV shows and watch them on this device.

If they want to make money on software their present course seems a good idea, if they want to make money on hardware they should just provide transcoding tools.

Re: Watching "legal" content on the ZVUE!

HandHeld is coming outt with a MP4 upgrade with a easy and smooth tool, that will allow one to move almost any content from one platform to one that will fit on the ZSVUE Player. Go to www.zvue.com

Re: Watching "legal" content on the ZVUE!

Yes I heard that too. I met the CEO at a press reception. I understand They will be in the stores in Jan, But Iordered and got one from their web site www.zvue.com
I like what it does now. I have enjoyed some of the HHe music videos and street racing, and I loaded 29 hours of MP3 music I got on the web and used a card reader I bought for $19 at Circuit City and put it on a 128mb SD card.I also loaded on that same sd card about 20 J.Peg Pictures I very much look forward to upgrading to the MP4 so I can make my movies and DVD's potable. I hate school!!!

Re: Watching "legal" content on the ZVUE!

29 hours of MP3 on 128MBs? Uhhh you really meant 2.9 hours right? If not, please tell us about your compression technique! Also, I am glad to hear someone has this player! J&R claims that the manufacturer still hasn't shipped anything yet.

Re: Also on IFA

GemSOC (http://www.gemsoc.com.tw/) was the name of the company that displayed it. Don't know their relationship to HandHeld...

Re: Also on IFA

GemSOC MJB-3100 is a Portable A/V Jukebox which combines:
- a digital video recorder
- digital video player
- photo viewer
- audio player
- portable hard disk
http://www.gemsoc.com.tw/pro_mjb3100.asp

The ZVUE! does not have a hard drive.
The MJB-3100 does not accept SD cards.

Both units have a 2.5" TFT LCD.

Thanks for the tip.
I've requested an online interview with GemSOC management.

Re: Also on IFA

The GemSoc will retail for around $ 300 - at least that was my understanding. I had a chat to the guys on the stand ( I'm a buyer ) and the trade price will be approx. 200 bucks. It looks like a really cool player tho'.

ZVUE

The ZVUE is lame. For $100 you get a proprietary media player. Everything, everything, you wish to view has to be purchased from HHELD. And, it has a 2-1/2 inch screen. Who wants to watch a movie on a 2-1/2 inch screen? Screw this. Why waste your money on an item that will end up at the yard sale next year?

Re: ZVUE

For $100 you get a proprietary media player.

The ZVUE! plays video and MP3. At the moment, it is the lowest priced "removeable media" MP3 player on the market.

As for video. The ZVUE! firmware can be updated easily from the net. In the future, it will play other video formats.

Additionally, for those who already have movies languishing on their hard drives in the MPEG-4 format, HandHeld will soon release a software package for converting these files into a form compatible with its codec. (Note to Schulhof: a conversion from DivX would be nice, too.) Burn the result onto an SD card via the device's USB connection and your kids will have another movie for the ZVUE.
Spectrum IEEE

Everything, everything, you wish to view has to be purchased from HHELD.

Images from digital cameras can be viewed on the ZVUE!
It will play any MP3 file.
Free HHe video will also be available from the net.

Who wants to watch a movie on a 2-1/2 inch screen?

Everyone waiting in line, on the go - and kids. The 2.5 TFT color screen is really sharp.

Re: ZVUE

Well, this is being marketed as a PVP so when the above poster complains about everything coming from the manufacturer I am sure he is talking about video not stills, or mp3s. If the manufacturer doesn't supply users with MPEG4 playback and a USB cable as part of the price this isn't going to sell beyond the gift market. Who in his right mind is going to pay $6 for a music video that is available for free as an MPEG4 on the web? Someone needs a reality check.

Where Is It?

I placed my order BEFORE their Dec 15 deadline for Holiday shipping and have not so much as received an e-mail other than the automated response stating a message will be sent when the product is shipped.
I am also not even getting any response to my technical support requests.
Also, according to their web site you can't even copy directly to the player with the USB cable yet. You need a seperate device to transfer info to a media card.
What's the use?
I believe this product will be one of the dreams that DIES due to a PR engine that is revving a LOT louder than the actual product. :-(
Shame. I thought it sounded too good to be true...
